Three employees from leading insurance broker, Cowens, are planning a gruelling 270km cycle challenge around the Main Orkney Island in aid of East Midlands fundraising group, Big C Little C.

Kevin Gee, Chris Bown and David Burnhope from Cowens’ Mansfield office will take on two circular routes over a two-day period on 22nd and 23rd July, climbing ascents over 3,000m in total. The team hope to raise as much as possible for Big C Little C, which supports Cancer Research UK and The Jenny Fairs Diamond Appeal, which provides funds for the NSPCC across Nottinghamshire.

David Burnhope, Commercial Insurance Executive at Cowens, planned the team’s route. He said:

“When the business pledged to support Big C Little C, I knew I wanted to get involved in some way to raise money for two such worthwhile causes. The idea to visit the Orkney Islands was originally part of a charity walking trip, but as Kevin, Chris and I began planning, we decided to make the challenge more difficult and over a longer distance, in order to really push ourselves and raise as much as possible.

“Cancer has affected almost every member of our team in some way and many of us have children, so doing something proactive to support this charity, which does so much in the East Midlands, was a no brainer. We are hoping to raise £2000 through sponsorship and have all started our training for the cycle. We’re now looking forward to the challenge ahead!”

Cowens’ cycling challenge is one of many charity events the business has planned in aid of Big C Little C throughout the year. Other events include charity raffles, mud runs and dinners to raise as much as possible for both Cancer Research and NSPCC. Big C Little C is a fundraising group for businesses across the East Midlands and together with Cowens, the group has some of the region’s biggest names on board as partners.
